It is understandable of the Popularity of this Ganden Samye trekking route is understandable. As it has much to offer from Lakes, beautiful alpine landscape, herders Camp to the scared site.

It best to do this trekking tour from Mid-may to Mid-October. Its wet in Summertimes, yet its greenest with wildflower spangle the alpine meadows.

This Ganden Samye Trekking tour is for ten days, with highly recommend four days acclimatization stay in Lhasa. If it is possible we would recommend you to include addition tours to Shigatse or Mount Everest Basecamp before starting this tour.

The Trek tour starts at the Ganden monastery in Lhasa and ends at another important Buddhist monastery of Samye monastery.

Itinerary of Ganden Samye trekking

Day 1Arrival in Lhasa

Elevation:3656m

We begun the Ganden Samye trekking tour with your arrival in Lhasa. We will receive you either at Lhasa Airport or at the Lhasa Tran Station. After small induction with your tour guide and driver along the way, you will be taken to your hotel. 

Its recommend to take a rest in hotel for some time to get acclimatize to High altitude of Tibet. Depending on time, by the evening some one from Agency will come to meet you at the hotels and discuss the itinerary and other stuff. Your guide will meet you next morning for visit to Local attractions in Lhasa.

Day 2Lhasa Guided Tour

Visit Jokhang Temple and Sera monastery.

In the morning,  your guide will meet you at the hotel after the breakfast. Attraction for the morning is a visit to Jokhang temple. It is the holiest temple or Macca of Tibetan Buddhism.

You will take a walk to the temple. After the visit, you can explore the local market on you own-self. Your guide will fix the time and meet up place for afternoon tour. 

In the afternoon you will visit the Sera Monastery. It is most preserved monastery in Tibet. In the monastery you can sit and observe monks debating in courtyard. 

If you would like explore the monastery on your own. You can tell your guide to give you some free times to explore the monastery on your own.

Day 3Lhasa Guided Tour

Visit Potala Palace,  and Drepung Monastery

You will visit the grand Potala Palace in the morning. The palace is an important landmark of Tibet and the masterpiece of Tibetan Architecture.

It was first built by King Songtsen Gampo, the 33rd king of Tibet’s Yurlung dynasty. Later in 17th century it was rebuilt by 5th Dalai Lama and use it as resident of successive Dalai Lama and his government. 

It is challenging to walk up the stair to 13th floor, but it is worthwhile to visit the spiritual palace, that is listed on the world heritage sites. you will climb up from the front and descent from the backside of the palace.

We will visit the Drepung Monastery in the afternoon. It is once the largest monastery in the world housing over 10,000 monks. There are lots to see along the winding and narrow lane of the monastery. 

Day 4Drive from Lhasa to Ganden Monastery and Trubshi Village

Visit Ganden Monastery and Trubshi Village

Today we are leaving Lhasa for the Ganden Samye Trekking. But first we will visit the Ganden Monastery.  The monastery is located on the hill overlooking the amphitheatrical valley at 3900 meters above sea level. 

It is the main monastery of Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism (Yellow hat sect). Its founder Je Tsongkhapa is also the founder of Gelugpa sect. The main relic of the monastery is the assemble hall with his golden throne and his Tomb Stupa.  

We can also go for a hiking around the monastery where you will see a beautiful Kyichu River valley and sky burial site. This hiking would take about an hour to complete.

After the monastery, we will down towards Trubshi Village, here we will camp for a night.

Day 5Hiking from Turbshi (3952) to Hepu (4240m) and Yama Do (4490m)

Distance: 5.1km, Duration: 4 hours, Ascent: 537m

Today we will walk upwards about 5 kilometer and ascent for 537 meter. Our trek will end at Yama Do ( Campsite). 

We will reach Hepu village after 45 minutes. Follow by Hepu Yul Lha ( Local Deity) a divine white yak. After three hour and half hours of walking we will cross the Shuga pass.

Crossing the Tashi-Chu, following the watercourse originating from Shuga pass we can find different kinds of wildflowers all around.

Through marshy meadows, we have to climb up steadily for an hour to get Yama Do, our campsite for today.

Day 6Hiking from Yama Do (4490m)- Shuga La Pass (5250m) – Tsotup Chu (4980)

Distance: 10kms, Duration: 5-7 hours, Ascent: 1000m, Descent: 450m 

This is hardest day of trekking in this tour. Here we will walk for ten kilometers with ascent over a 1000 Meters to Shuga la pass (5250 meter above sea level) follow by descent of 450 Meter. 

As we reach on top of the pass, we will see downstream valley below. Here we will find local nomads and their tent guarded by Tibetan Mastiff dog. 

As we will lowest point of the trail for the day. We will have to cross the knee-deep river in freezing water. It is highly recommended bring Hiking scandal to help crossing and help keeping your hiking dry.

After the river we will have to walk uphill to our camping site in half and hour.

Day 7Hiking from Tsotup Chu (4980) – Chitul la (5210) Herder’s Camp

Distance: 14km, Duration: 5 hours, Ascent: 300m, Decent: 400m

Today we will have to walk for 5 hour crossing 14 kilometers, with ascent of 300 meters and 400 meters decent. 

In the morning, a mild trek within a valley takes us to Chitu-la pass (5210 meter). After the pass, we will see three of small lakes and passing the cairns (5077m). 

We will have a very steep descent and a long trek to reach to our campsite for the night.

Day 8Hiking from Herder’s Camp (4460m) to Yamalung Hermitage and drive to Samye Monastery (3630m)

Distance: 39km. Duration: 10 hours, Descent: 1200m

Today marks the end of Ganden Samye trekking tour and it is easy trek. we will walk in relatively plan path until we reach Yama Lung hermitage. Guru Rinpoche has once meditated in this hermitage and received empowerment from from Buddha of longevity. At the hermitage, we will find our driver and he will take us to Samye Monastery Hotel.

Day 9Drive from Samye Monastery to Tsedang

Distance: 48 kms, Elevation: 3568m

Samye is the very first Buddhist Monastery in Tibet. Built in 8th century by King Songtsen Gampo. After a visit to the monastery, we will drive to other side Yarlung river to Yungbulagang ( the first fort in Tibet.

We will spend the night in Tsedang town.

Day 10Departure from Tibet

Today is the last day of Ganden Samye Trekking tour.  We will take you to Lhasa airport for departure from Tibet.
